Visit to Kajoetangan Heritage Village

As part of the field activities on 7 August 2025, participants of the Maritime Nusantara & Sustainability Policy Initiative – Centre Policy Research Trip visited Kajoetangan Heritage Village in Malang. The site is one of the city’s most significant heritage zones, known for its well-preserved colonial-era architecture and active community-based conservation efforts.

During the visit, students were introduced to the layered histories of the area, including its cultural, architectural, and socio-economic evolution. Local guides provided historical narratives that highlighted the transformation of Kajoetangan from a traditional neighbourhood into a living heritage enclave. Participants had the opportunity to explore how community engagement and local governance contribute to heritage preservation and urban sustainability.

This experience deepened participants’ understanding of how historical knowledge informs present-day development planning, particularly in balancing progress with cultural identity. It also aligned with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by demonstrating the importance of protecting cultural heritage as a foundation for inclusive and resilient urban futures.
