Sustaining Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institutions

Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, Moh. Mudzakkir, Ph.D. remarked that people can come and go but organisation (Muhammadiyah higher education) must be sustained. His remark was enunciated during his presentation in International Nusantara Malay Archipelago Seminar Series held at Centre for Policy Research (CPR) Universiti Sains Malaysia on November 11th, 2023.

The Alumni of CPR mentioned that at the moment there are 80 Muhammadiyah universities and 3 'Aisyiyah universities across Indonesia and Malaysia, the newly established Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM). In total, Muhammadiyah organisation has 171 higher education institutions. Other than that, the organisation also established Universitas Siber Muhammadiyah in adherence with the current technological development that allows virtual lecture.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Reevany Bustami as the Head of Nusantara Malay Archipelago Research at CPR USM led the seminar as moderator. Among key figures are UMAM’s delegates Prof. Ir. Dr. Waluyo Adi Siswanto, Dr. Wachid Ridwan and Dr. Mutiara Dwi Sari, Pimpinan Ranting Istimewa Muhammadiyah (PRIM) Mr. Dimas, several Muhammadiyah ‘Aisyiyah members in Penang, NGO Pertubuhan Masyarakat Indonesia (PERMAI) Penang, and delegates from Universitas Semarang (USM).

The seminar was conducted in collaboration with Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia Universiti Sains Malaysia (PPI USM). At the moment, Nusantara Malay Archipelago Seminar Series is one of the routine programme of Nusantara Malay Archipelago Research at CPR USM and PPI USM.
