Centre for Policy Research, USM Marks 50 Years of High-Impact Policy Research

The Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) celebrated its 50th Anniversary as a leading institution in socio-economic studies and high-impact policy research in Malaysia. The celebration, held at Hotel St. Giles Wembley, Penang, was graced by the presence of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi Haji Abdul Razak.

Since its establishment in 1974, CPR has played a vital role as a bridge between the university and society through policy research that evaluates the effectiveness of various government initiatives. Among its significant contributions is the pioneering of microcredit projects in Malaysia, which led to the establishment of Amanah Ikhtiar and TEKUN, now recognised as national models for poverty alleviation.

The officiating address by the Vice-Chancellor of USM, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, highlighted CPR’s continuous contributions in producing relevant and impactful socio-economic research that supports national development. The celebration not only recognised CPR’s five-decade legacy in policy research but also outlined its vision to continue leading innovation in social sciences and community empowerment in the years ahead.
